PAINTINGS CHANTED
Exhibition of works made by village women Naja located in West Bengal (India)
lllustrated stories on long strips of paper painted.
All paintings selected for the travelling exhibition SINGING PICTURES.
THE SINGING WOMEN OF THE INDIAN TRADITION were created by
female artists. Today, through the sale of their works both in India and
abroad, these artists have been able to achieve a certain degree of
economic and social emancipation, improving their villagers.
Quite interesting ar the paintings that decipt conteporary globally known
events, which the artists see on TV and the illustrate in a timeless and
fable-like manner.
Thus, for example, some Patachitra depict the attack on the Twin
Towers on 11 September 2001, while others illusrate the 2004 tsunami
or serve to inform on issues as AIDS, all using traditional pictorial
language.
